About us

Sophie

Sophie is a well-known food writer, speaker and presenter. Short,  greedy and afraid of plummeting, loves make-up, books and crisps, not adventurous, loves 5 star hotels, fancy cocktails and has an Instagram called “least intrepid traveller” as well as her well known destitute gourmet by Sophie Gray brand including 9 cookbooks, 14k+ Facebook fans and is well known as the editor of Food magazine.

Nerida

Nerida is a professional broadcaster, well-travelled, intrepid, and adventurous, rides a motorbike, walks – no she really walks! the Camino, the Tongariro or just trots 100 km for charity, goes on mission trips to Nagaland and will try pretty much anything. She eats meat only occasionally, loathes halloumi (too squeaky), loves to have a dance, and is easily bored.

This demographic of women are under or misrepresented in most media. We are the first generation of “liberated women” – our mothers had access to education, contraception and careers so we are uniquely advantaged but at our age but we have also become “the sandwich generation”.

The Sandwich Generation

We are the first generation of “liberated women” – our mothers had access to education, contraception and careers so we are uniquely advantaged but at our age but we have also become “the sandwich generation”. The sandwich generation are those caught between ageing parents and our own millennial offspring and in some cases grand-kids too. We aren’t cougars or golden girls, most of us are too knackered to be honest as we have jobs or careers ourselves but are still expected to be on-call carers for partners, parents and offspring while dealing with our own stuff – the physical challenges inherent to our age-group, and the resulting effects on our self-image, attitudes and relationships.

So, what's in the podcast?

In the Podcast we make light hearted forays into all sorts of topics as they appear to us now at our stage of life. Each episode includes sound bites on the subject from a couple of 7-8 yr olds which is funny but also a salient reminder of how different a world girls are growing up in now.

What is the tone of the podcast?

The tone of the episodes is positive, light hearted, helpful, encouraging, inclusive, funny and non- polarising – a very “broad strokes” approach. Our aim is for our audience to identify with us rather than be challenged by us. Each ep runs for around 25-30 minutes and has a 5 star rating on itunes and is supported by an Instagram account called @iwasntexpectingthatnz
